On 3/20/22, at approximately 1445 hours, Alaska State Troopers contacted a male resident of Manokotak regarding several open arrest warrants and an ongoing DV investigation. When troopers attempted to arrest the male he fled on foot, then stopped, produced a knife, and attempted to take his own life. Troopers immediately rendered lifesaving aid to the male, who was stabilized and medevaced to Anchorage for treatment

On 03/22/2022 at about 1845 hours, the Alaska State Troopers remanded Jeannie Gaube, age 19 of Ketchikan to Ketchikan Correctional Center on an outstanding warrant issued by the Ketchikan Courthouse reference the original charges of Theft in the 4th Degree and VCOR. Bail was set at $500.00.

On 03/31/2022 at 1230 hours, at the direction of a probation officer, Thorne Bay VPSO’s conducted a probation check of Vern Redding’s home. During the check, Vern provided a sample for a urinalysis. The urinalysis indicated that Vern had been using methamphetamine. Vern was arrested at 1247 hours for the use of illegal substances while on probation and was remanded to the Craig Jail awaiting arraignment.

On 03/18/22 at approximately 14:28, Alaska State Troopers received a request from the Iditarod HQ for a SAR. A musher had initiated her SOS beacon near Solomon. The musher and two dog teams were transported to safety by search teams.

Update 3/29: On March 28, 2022, at approximately 4:00 pm, aerial searchers aboard Alaska State Trooper’s HELO 2 located the remains of Anthony Solomon in a wooded area near mile 349 of the Park Highway. There is no foul play suspected at this time. Solomon’s body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. Next of kin have been notified.

Anthony was last seen traveling on foot on Sunday, March 20, 2022 in Ester. He was wearing a green sweater, blue pants, and zip-up boots. Anthony is a 5’10” Alaska Native male with black hair.

On 03/25/2022, Alaska Wildlife Troopers from Soldotna post contacted Christopher Coupchiak (29 YOA) of Kenai. Coupchiak was found to be illegally feeding moose at his residence in Kenai. Coupchiak was issued a citation for feeding game with a bail amount of $320.

On 3/26/22, at 1144 hours, Sitka Mountain Rescue contacted Fairbanks Dispatch to report that Jeffrey Wright, age 61 of Sitka, contacted the Sitka Police Department to report that he had fallen approximately 200 feet on Mt. Verstovia and he injured his hip and needed assistance. A USCG helicopter responded to the area and located Wright and they were able to hoist him up to the helicopter and transport him to the Sitka Airport where an awaiting ambulance transported him to the hospital for further medical care.

On March 29, 2022, at 8:19 am, the Alaska State Troopers were notified of a shooting at a residence in Soldotna. The Alaska State Troopers immediately responded to the scene. A preliminary investigation revealed that 28-year-old Soldotna resident Nathan Penrod had shot 29-year-old Soldotna resident Zechariah Bowman several times with a handgun. Bowman was declared deceased at the scene, and Penrod had fled the home. A short time later, Penrod contacted the Alaska State Troopers. On March 30, 2022 at 12:30 am, Penrod was arrested on charges of Murder I and Assault III and remanded to Wildwood Correctional Center. Bowman’s next of kin have been notified, and his remains were sent to the State Medical Examiner for autopsy.

On 3/30/22, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post contacted Mitchell Eide, age 56 of Petersburg, after observing his vessel the F/V Rose Lee, with commercial seine gear deployed after the 5:00 P.M. closure of the herring fishery. Eide was cited for commercial herring fishing closed period. An arraignment is set in the District Court at Sitka.

On 03/22/22 at approximately 12:24, Alaska State Troopers received a report of Liquor Laws violation. Upon investigation, Five Miller-Lites were confiscated at Bering Air, and charges of Importation were forwarded to OSPA for the individual involved.

Update 4/1: The Alaska State Troopers that discharged their service weapon during the officer-involved shooting on March 29, 2022, are identified as:
- Alaska State Trooper Caleb Lloyd, a four-year veteran of the Alaska State Troopers currently assigned to the Mat-Su Valley
- Alaska State Trooper Harrison McKenney, a three-year veteran of the Alaska State Troopers currently assigned to the Mat-Su Valley
- Alaska State Trooper Andrew Wilkins, a one-year veteran of the Alaska State Troopers currently assigned to the Mat-Su Valley
The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is conducting a thorough investigation into the incident. Once their investigation is complete, it will be independently reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecution.
Original: On March 29, 2022, at approximately 5:46 pm, the Alaska State Troopers were notified that a man who was armed with an ax and a firearm had entered a home uninvited in Wasilla. The man, who was not known to the occupants of the home, was making demands to see a person that was not at the residence. The man then left the home and fled into a wooded area nearby. The occupants of the home were not injured.
Alaska State Troopers immediately responded to the scene along with DPS HELO 5 which was being operated by an Alaska Wildlife Trooper. Troopers began searching the wooded area near the residence for the man. While they were searching, the man was indiscriminately firing a weapon in an unknown direction. During the search, Troopers briefly spotted the man; however, he refused to follow commands and continued moving through the wooded area.
At approximately 8:15 pm, the man was located near Edelweiss Drive. The man began shooting at multiple Alaska State Troopers in the area. During an exchange of gunfire between the man and Troopers, the man was fatally wounded. The man, 35-year-old Wasilla resident Joshua Baert, was declared deceased at the scene. Next of kin have been notified.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. As stated in DPS policy, the Alaska State Troopers that discharged their service weapons have been placed on administrative leave for three days.
The Alaska Bureau of Investigation is now conducting a thorough investigation into the incident; once complete, their investigation will then be independently reviewed by the Alaska Office of Special Prosecutions. The name of the troopers that discharged their service weapons will be released after 72 hours per department policy.
