JUNEAU — The Alaska Senate will vote on an $11.55 billion state operating budget beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The plan under consideration rejects most cuts proposed by Gov. Mike Dunleavy and is similar — in its approach to state services — to a competing idea approved by the Alaska House of Representatives in April.
Unlike the House plan, the Senate budget contains spending for a $3,000 Permanent Fund dividend paid using the traditional formula in state statute.
“That’s $1.94 billion to pay out a dividend using the statutory formula,” said Sen. Bert Stedman, R-Sitka and co-chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.
The Senate budget does not say where the state will get money to pay that dividend. The House and Senate budgets have a $700 million “surplus” if dividends are not included. Spending $1.94 billion on dividends would create a deficit of more than $1.2 billion, but that amount could be covered by spending from savings. [ADN]
The most amazing thing to me about #Alaska politics is that Republicans support giving your children a full $3k pfd (while the other party doesn't) and yet the Republicans are accused of hating Alaskans.
I was banned recently off of my personal FB page because I wrote an article against funding the AMHS if it means giving our children their full share. I was accused of being a bigot and a racist for defending that view.
If you support politicians who vote against giving you and your grandkids their PFD, there is something fundamentally wrong with you. Why wouldn't you want your kids to enjoy the same yearly Fall benefits that you had all your life?
Are you selfish? Short-sighted? Simply mentally deficient? The Governor (for all his issues) was in #Ketchikan this April and had protestors show up...why? Because he wanted you to have your Constitutional Right to a full pfd. Really? You are going to protest over that?
Shame on the parents who support stripping the PFD. If you're single and support 1,500$ pfd's vs $3,000 pfd's I get it...you'd rather a State Union employee or Career politician get it instead. I GUESS that makes logical sense....
Of course there is no logic. People are emotional. One person in Craig (whom I used to respect) once made the shocking claim that "people are more logical than emotional" and then when I challenged Him on the claim he blocked me on Facebook--not very logical.
What would I know about logic and emotions though...I'm just a Millennial who lives in my parents basement _______Insert Millennial Cliche.
