On 05/24/2022 at approximately 0328 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of an assault near K’ay K’aany street in Hydaburg. Investigation revealed, Justice Peele age 25, of Hydaburg assaulted a male acquaintance. Justice was arrested for Assault in the 4th degree. Justice was transported to Craig Jail without incident and released on own recognizance.

On 05/14/2022 at 2155 hours, Seward AST conducted a traffic stop on the Seward Highway in Moose Pass. The driver was identified as Netta A. Veal 24 YOA, of Anchorage and the passenger was identified as Kylee E. Barker 26 YOA of Anchorage. The investigation revealed Veal was driving under the influence of drugs. Additionally, both Veal and Barker smuggled Suboxone into Spring Creek Correctional Center (SCCC). Veal delivered Suboxone to Dewayne M. Kirkwood 26 YOA, of SCCC and Barker delivered Suboxone to Elteyvionne Z. Carlton 21 YOA, of SCCC. Veal was placed under arrest for DUI, felony misconduct involving controlled substances, and felony promoting contraband. Barker was placed under arrest for felony misconduct involving controlled substances and felony promoting contraband. Charges are being forwarded to the District Attorney for felony promoting contraband, felony tampering with physical evidence, and misdemeanor misconduct involving controlled substances against both Carlton and Kirkwood. Barker and Veal were transported to the Seward City Jail where they were remanded without bail.

On 05/24/22 at approximately 0539 hours, AST received a report of a unresponsive male in the driver's seat of a running vehicle, with a firearm in the passenger seat. Investigation revealed David Shevchuck operated a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol. Further investigation revealed Shevchuck was a felon in possession of two concealable firearms. Schevchuck was transported to Palmer AST post for processing where he provided a breath sample above the legal limit. Shevchuck was remanded to Matsu Pretrial on counts of MIW III x 2, MIW IV x2, and DUI.

On 05/07/2022 at approximately 1015 hours, Kodiak AWT was notified that Alaska Department of Fish & Game personnel reported a bear hunter had brought in a brown bear to be sealed and that bear was found to be a cub based on scientific observations of the skull and teeth. Investigation revealed Keith Primm, age 58 of Willow, AK, had harvested a brown bear cub during his spring bear hunt on Kodiak Island. A “cub bear” as it pertains to brown/grizzly bears is defined in 5AAC92.990(a)(20) as: “a bear in its first or second year of life.”
Primm was issued a summons for taking a brown bear cub, with an arraignment date of 5/27/2022 in Kodiak District Court.

On May 25, 2022, at approximately 5:30 pm, the Alaska State Troopers were notified that a juvenile male had threatened another juvenile male with a firearm on the grounds of Wood River Elementary School in Fairbanks. Alaska State Troopers immediately responded to the school and located both juveniles in the area. After further investigation, Troopers determined that the firearm was actually an airsoft-style pellet gun that resembled a functioning firearm. It was determined that the suspect juvenile threatened the second juvenile by pointing the pellet gun at him, however, no pellets were actually fired from the weapon and neither party was injured. Troopers do not believe that either juvenile was a student at Wood River Elementary during the 2021-2022 school year. No classes were in session at the time of the incident, and there is no known connection to the school. The juvenile suspect was arrested by Troopers and turned over to Division of Juvenile Justice custody.

On 05/28/2022 at approximately 1834 hours, MATCOM received 911 calls advising of a plane that crashed into the Matanuska River near mile 99 of the Glenn Highway. The plane was occupied by three individuals including two adults and a 7-month-old child.
Nearby citizens witnessed the crash and immediately responded to assist where they found the airplane sinking into the river. Brett Winterbottom of Glacier View tethered himself to his ATV and swam into the Matanuska River and saved the adult male and 7-month-old child. Brett passed the baby to Tammy Saunders, a nurse who is visiting Alaska from Texas who was able to immediately render aid.
The female occupant of the aircraft became separated and swam herself to shore on the opposite side of the river. Another citizen arrived in a helicopter, collected her, and transported her to her family.
LifeMed responded to the scene and assisted in transporting the female and the infant to the hospital.
AST would like to thank the citizens who provided immediate rescue efforts and saved these three individuals!
