Type: Fail to submit Charter Logbook

On 9/1/20, ADF&G notified the Alaska Wildlife Troopers on Prince of Wales Island that they had received a batch of charter logbook pages from a sport fish lodge on POW, several weeks after they were required to be submitted. On 9/14/20, AWT contacted the responsible party from the lodge, Josh Anderson, age 33 of Klawock. Anderson was issued a minor offense citation for the violation.

On 9/5/20, ADF&G notified the Alaska Wildlife Troopers on Prince of Wales Island that they had received a batch of charter logbook pages from a sport fish lodge on POW, several weeks after they were required to be submitted. On 9/14/20, AWT contacted the responsible party from the lodge, Scott Peakes, age 62 of Klawock. Peakes was issued a minor offense citation for the violation.

Type: Snagging fish in fresh water

On 9/14/20, Alaska Wildlife Troopers on Prince of Wales Island observed Kayden Fowles, age 19 of Utah, snagging silver salmon in the fresh waters of the Harris river. AWT contacted Fowles, who admitted to snagging two of the four salmon in his possession. Fowles was issued a minor offense citation for the violation. The two illegally taken salmon were seized and later donated to a local charity.

On 09-15-20 at approximately 1752 hours, MatCom dispatch received a report from InReach stating they had received an SOS message from Hasitha Kankanamge, a 29-year-old male from the country of India. According to coordinates provided by InReach, Kankanamge was located at approximately 8.5 miles northeast of Hatchers Pass on a 5,770-foot knife-edge ridge. Kankanamge advised he was hypothermic, it was snowing, he was not ambulatory, he was bleeding and he had a hand injury. Due to environmental on-scene weather, pending darkness, and the medical situation as described; AKRCC (Alaska Rescue Coordination Center) was contacted to provide a helo hoist op. RCC launched an Air National Guard HH-60 helo at 2022 hours. Upon arrival, the Air National Guard rescue helo was unable to reach the victim due to inclement weather. Pararescue PJ’s were inserted, and they attempted to reach the victim throughout the night. On 09-16-20 at approximately 1010 hours, the PJ’s reached Kankanamge and transported him to Providence Hospital in Anchorage for medical treatment. During this rescue mission, 3 Air National Guard aircraft were utilized. The Alaska State Troopers wishes to thank AKRCC, The Air National Guard pilots and crew, and the Pararescue PJ’s for their exemplary rescue work.

On 9/16/20, Alaska Wildlife Troopers on Prince of Wales Island observed Jonathan Castor, age 29 of Hollis, snagging silver salmon in the waters of the Klawock Harbor that are closed to snagging per regulation. AWT contacted Castor, who admitted to snagging the one salmon in his possession. Castor was issued a minor offense citation for the violation. The illegally taken salmon was seized and later donated to a local charity.
