Ketchikan Fire Department, along with North Tongass Vol. Fire Dept and South Tongass Volunteer Fire Department, responded to a reported structure fire in the 1100 block of Dunton Street around 6:00am Saturday morning.
The occupants had evacuated the house prior to fire personnel arriving. On arrival, crews found fire burning on a wood deck and in an adjacent house wall. Smoke was showing from the first and second story eves around the house indicating fire within the walls. An immediate offensive attack was put into motion. The fire attack was labor intensive due to the building construction, and took approximately an hour to get under control.
The City of Ketchikan Police Department assisted in the operations and scene security. One firefighter was transported to the hospital and later released. The structure sustained significant fire damage on the first and second floor. Fire Department officials remind everyone to be cautious with any type of outdoor burning during these warm, dry days.
