On 12/01/2018 at about 2316 hours, the Alaska State Troopers received a report of an Assault which occurred at a residence on Bearberry Lane. Investigation revealed that Merrie James, age 47, of Ketchikan assaulted a family member. James was arrested for Assault in the 4th Degree Domestic Violence and remanded to Ketchikan Correctional Center with No Bail. Alcohol was a factor.

On 12/03/18, the Alaska State Troopers’ Statewide Drug Enforcement Unit in Ketchikan contacted Labreea Shaelyn Brown (age 20 of Washington State) following her arrival into Ketchikan on a flight from Seattle, Washington. Investigation revealed that Brown was in possession of 26.1 gross grams of suspected heroin, which she intended to deliver to a third party in Ketchikan to be sold in the Ketchikan area. The estimated street value of the heroin when sold in Ketchikan at the common street distribution quantity of $100 for 0.1 grams is $26,000. Brown was arrested and remanded at the Ketchikan Correctional Center without bail pending arraignment on 12/04/18. Law enforcement officers from the following agencies assisted with this investigation: The Port of Seattle Police Department, the Ketchikan Airport Police Department, and Patrol Troopers and Court Service Officers from the Alaska State Troopers Ketchikan Post.

UPDATE: The Alaska State Troopers and Ketchikan Police Department have been working closely together to investigate the recent string of property crimes in the Ketchikan area. On December 5, 2018, a significant lead was developed in a number of the open investigations and, as a result, a suspect was identified. Subsequent investigation by both agencies led to the arrest of Cody Peters, 32 of Ketchikan. Peters was taken into custody and transported to the Ketchikan Correctional Center where he was lodged pending arraignment on the following felony level offenses: Burglary in the First Degree, Burglary in the Second Degree, Theft in the Second Degree x 3, and Misconduct Involving Weapons in the Third Degree. He was additionally charged with the misdemeanor offense of Criminal Mischief in the Fifth Degree .
Stemming from this investigation, a search warrant was obtained and served on a condo in Marine View Condominiums. A second suspect has been identified and taken into custody for an unrelated warrant. Numerous power tools and hand tools were seized per the warrant and many have been confirmed as stolen. Troopers and KPD officers will be working diligently to identify the owners of the stolen property so it can be returned to the appropriate people.

Original release: On 11-29-18 at approximately 1042 hours, the Alaska State Troopers in Ketchikan were notified of a theft. Investigation revealed that between 11-28-18 at 1600 hours, and 11-29-18 at 0700 hours, unknown person(s) entered a connex near mile 6 of the North Tongass Highway and removed construction equipment valued at approximately $3000.00. On December 5, 2018 at approximately 1320 hrs, Alaska State Troopers contacted Michael Baham, 33 of Ketchikan, at an apartment in Marine View Condominiums. Baham was taken into custody on multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest and transported to the Ketchikan Correctional Center. Baham was lodged at KCC pending arraignment for the original charges of Violating his Conditions of Release x 4 and Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance.

On 12/6/2018, David Vest, 42 of Ketchikan, was issued a summons to court for violating the gear requirements for his commercial Dungeness crab pots. The investigation began after AWT identified gear belonging to Vest fishing in the 12 Mile Arm area with escapement rings that violated regulation. Vest was given a December court date in the District Court of Ketchikan.

On 12/06/18, the Alaska State Troopers’ Statewide Drug Enforcement Unit in Ketchikan arrested Stephanie Orr (age 30 of Ketchikan) for Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree and Conspiracy to Commit Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance in the Second Degree. Orr’s arrest came as a result of an investigation into the seizure of 26.1 gross grams of suspected heroin from Labreea Shaelyn Brown (age 20 of Washington State) of Washington State following her arrival into Ketchikan on an Alaska Airlines flight into Ketchikan on 12/03/18. The estimated street value of the heroin when sold in Ketchikan at the common street distribution quantity of $100 for 0.1 grams is $26,000. Orr was arrested and remanded at the Ketchikan Correctional Center without bail pending arraignment on 12/07/18. The Ketchikan Airport Police Department assisted with this investigation.

On 12/08/2018 at about 1747 hours, the Alaska State Troopers conducted a traffic stop on a silver Subaru after AST received a REDDI report (Report Every Dangerous Driver Immediately) on the vehicle. The vehicle was stopped near the intersection of North Tongass Highway and Shoreline Drive. It was reported that the driver was having a hard time maintaining the lane of
travel. Investigation revealed that the driver a 17 year old male, of Ketchikan was in possession of Marijuana and paraphernalia. The juvenile was issued a Summons for MICS 5 and released to his parents.
