Logging in Hollis is Soon to Begin



Notice of Timber Harvest Operations


The Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry (DOF), sold the North Hollis Timber Sale (SSE-1346-K) to Viking Lumber Company, Inc on December 20, 2017.



The proposed timber sale encompasses 230 acres of General Use Lands with an approximate volume of 4,500 thousand board feet (MBF) to be harvested.



This timber sale is located on Prince of Wales Island, approximately one-mile north of the Inter-Island Ferry terminal, in Hollis Alaska. The legal description of the sale area within Sections 25, 26 and 35 of Township (T) 73 South, Range 84 East, Copper River Meridian. The sale area is found within the Craig C-2 Southwest and Craig B-2 Northwest USGS quadrangles. The main access for this sale area is through the Alaska Highway System, Klawock-Hollis Highway and the adjoining Aurora Drive Road.



The project is scheduled to start January 24, 2018 with road construction to access the sale area. The purchaser will be mobilizing equipment and timber cutting on the right-of-way will be taking place. Logging operations are anticipated to occur in the early spring of 2018.



Per the purchaser’s contract requirements: Purchaser is to provide and implement a communication plan to keep local residents and Inter-Island Ferry Authority travelers aware of timber sale activity. Purchaser is required to manage operational hazards that conflict with local residents and travelers. Heavy equipment use and hauling on Aurora Drive will be restricted during and within one half hour of scheduled school bus transit in the Aurora Drive and Nanny Bay Road area. Heavy equipment, blasting, cutting, and hauling operations will be restricted to 08:00-20:00 within one quarter mile of Aurora Drive. The purchaser will take all feasible actions to manage noise from the timber sale and the use of Jake brakes in the residential area is considered inappropriate, unless needed for emergency control of loaded trucks. Purchaser shall keep dust on the Aurora Road minimized during hauling operations by surface watering or other effective means approved by the DOF. All traffic shall use speeds appropriate for the operating conditions.
