September 20, 2017 ANCHORAGE — Governor Bill Walker today reacted to Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alaska’s announcement that it expects to see individual market health insurances rates drop by over 25 percent next year. The insurer cited the state’s reinsurance program as one of the key reasons for the substantial rate decrease.
“Premera’s announcement that it expects to see a 26.5 percent drop in the 2018 individual market rates shows that my team’s out-of-the box thinking in creating the Alaska Reinsurance Program—approved by the legislature—has paid off. It also supports a need for Congress to fully examine the impacts of any changes to the Affordable Care Act, which enabled the creation of this program. I continue to support a bipartisan approach that follows a comprehensive process to stabilize the market and ensure affordable health care coverage to Alaskans.” -- Governor Bill Walker
Earlier this month, Governor Walker explained why he’s committed to achieving stable and affordable care for all Alaskans. The op-ed is available here.
