On 07-25-16 at approximately 1545 hours, Alaska State Troopers on Prince of Wales Island received a REDDI report that a white Chevrolet pickup truck had driven recklessly through a Highway Work Zone near the Control Lake Junction by striking a construction sign and driving through the ditch. Prince of Wales AST contacted the vehicle at the Thorne Bay Road/Kasaan Road interchange. The driver, identified as Harold Smith (39 YOA of Klawock), was ultimately arrested for Driving Under the Influence and Reckless Driving. Smith was transported/remanded to the Craig City Jail. Bail was set at $1500 cash and Smith was ordered to be held until arraignment.

They were each issued a citation with bail set at $260 with an optional appearance in the Prince of Wales District Court for no crew member license. The vessel operator, Randolf Pilfold (65YOA) of Canada, was issued a citation for failing to display a ADF&G vessel number plate. Bail was set at $110 with an optional appearance in the Prince of Wales District Court.

On 07/28/16 at approximately 2336 hours, Alaska State Troopers on Prince of Wales responded to the report of death at a residence in Hollis. Investigation revealed David Watkins, age 65 of Hollis, died in his home of natural causes. Next of kin was present at the time and no foul play is suspected. The State Medical Examiner’s Office was contacted and released the body to the family.

On 7-28-16, at approximately 0050 hours, the Patrol Vessel Enforcer heard a distress call from the 41 foot pleasure craft “Outlaw” stating that they were taking on water and wouldn’t be able to stay on board much longer. The P/V Enforcer, which is the Department of Public Safety’s 84 foot patrol vessel based out of Ketchikan, immediately launched its skiff with two Wildlife Troopers to respond. The P/V Enforcer pulled anchor and followed. The distress call came from the area of Long Island which is located just off of the southwest coast of Prince of Wales Island. The P/V Enforcer was anchored about 18 miles to the west near Dall Island when the call came in. While the skiff was en route, the Coast Guard reported that they had lost contact with the vessel in distress. The Enforcer Skiff arrived on scene 0139 hours and located four individuals in a small dingy and three others on a rock near their mostly submerged vessel. Two of those individuals were wet and soaked in gasoline. The Troopers were able to take all seven individuals aboard and then waited in calm waters until the P/V Enforcer arrived. The Enforcer crew took the seven passengers on board and provided dry clothes, food and drinks. The Enforcer then provided transportation to Clarence Strait where they rendezvoused with USCG who took the passengers the remaining way back to Ketchikan. All seven members rescued were from the same family. Four reside in Ketchikan and the remaining three in California. The P/V Enforcer was in the middle of a routine commercial and sport fish patrol at the time of the incident.
