On 2/9/16 at approximately 0100 hours, Alaska State Troopers on Prince of Wales Island received a report of vehicle theft and criminal mischief at the Inter-Island Ferry Authority (IFA) Terminal in Hollis. Investigation revealed that Kenneth A. Burchfield, age 35 of Hollis, had broken into the secured yard at the terminal. Burchfield then stole a 2010 Chevrolet passenger van owned by the IFA. He drove the vehicle through a locked security gate in order to flee the area, causing extensive damage to both the gate and van (approximate damages were $6000.00 and $8000.00 respectively). Burchfield was located at his residence shortly after the incident and found to be heavily intoxicated. Burchfield was placed under arrest for Vehicle Theft in the first degree, Felony DUI (due to two prior DUI convictions in the past ten years), Felony Refusal to submit to a chemical test, Criminal Mischief in the third degree (x2), Criminal Trespass in the first, and Driving While License Revoked. Burchfield was transported to the Craig Jail facility where he was remanded without bail.
